Michael W Wong, DO

Michael W. Wong, D.O. studied Biology and Psychology at Saint Vincent College and received his doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is a board-certified specialist in sports medicine and practices exclusively in nonoperative orthopedic care. Dr. Wong completed residency in family medicine at UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside before he completed his fellowship through the world-renowned UPMC Sports Medicine program, training under the physicians and medical teams that care for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Steelers and numerous local schools and universities. During his training, he served as the fellowship team physician for the Fox Chapel Area School District athletic programs, Saint Vincent College football team, University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball team and the Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey team. He has also provided medical coverage for the other athletic teams of the University of Pittsburgh, Robert Morris University and Saint Vincent College as well. In addition to these responsibilities, he has also volunteered time working with the Pittsburgh Marathon, EQT Ten-Mile Race, Mario Lemieux Foundation 6.6k, Pittsburgh Passion and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. He has experience treating athletes of all ages and abilities, from the recreational level to the professional and Olympic level. Dr. Wong has received the “Exceptional Resident Teacher” Award from UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine and also received “Above and Beyond” recognition from UPMC during his training. He has also presented at medical conferences and has volunteered his time teaching medical students and residents. 

Dr. Wong practices exclusively in sports and orthopedic medicine and is trained in musculoskeletal ultrasound to aid in diagnosis and to perform procedures. He is committed to bringing the future of sports and orthopedic medicine into the clinic today. Dr. Wong believes in empowering patients in order to advance their own health and wellness to live their lives to the fullest. By combining medical residency training - rather than surgical residency training - with advanced fellowship training in orthopedics, Dr. Wong brings a different perspective to orthopedic care. His goal is to deliver the highest quality of evidence-based, nonoperative orthopedic care with a personal touch. If you are found to have a problem that would be better treated surgically, Dr. Wong will help facilitate an appropriate referral to a skilled surgeon for a consultation, as his training and experiences have allowed him to develop collaborative relationships with many of the region’s finest surgical and interventional specialists. He currently serves as the Penn-Trafford School district team physician, as well as a USA Boxing ringside physician, among other sports related organizations.

Since 2020, Dr. Wong has practiced at PT Family Medicine, returning home to work alongside his father - Kevin Wong, MD – who has been a fixture in primary care and the local community. Together they have worked to navigate a changing healthcare landscape in order to provide exceptional, patient-centered care. As the practice has grown and evolved – and demand for nonoperative orthopedic care has accelerated - it became clear that in order to better highlight the unique services, treatments and orthopedic care that Dr. Michael Wong specializes in, an update was needed. In January of 2025, PT Family Medicine developed and launched a new specialty care department of the practice in response to this need. Thus, Modern Edge Sports & Orthopedic Medicine was born. This department, under the direction of Dr. Wong, oversees and provides orthopedic and sports medicine care, regenerative medicine treatments and wellness initiatives such as bioidentical hormone replacement. The aim of this department aligns with the vision and values that Dr. Wong champions: Providing the highest quality orthopedic and specialty care with the most advanced technologies and treatments with the goal of maximizing each individual’s potential to promote optimal health and wellness.
